Girls on Fire: Mind/Body Fitness Dance (ARTober event)
FRIDAY, October 25
6:30 to 7:45
Eastport Hall 124 @ UMA-Bangor (128 Texas Ave.)

the story: the “Girls on Fire” theme takes us on a journey through music and movement as we experience a story of the world on fire and we become protagonists in our own story. We’re grounded and connected to earth even as we play in in the clouds. We’re warriors who fight with our minds and our bodies.
the music: a mixture of inspiring and empowering music from Janelle Monáe, Lorde, Beyoncé, Meghan Trainor, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, Ani diFranco, and more!
the movement: easy-to-follow fitness dance movements, with hip hop and belly dance inspiration.
the space: safe and open—no judgement, no boundaries, no competition, just community.
the (feminist) philosophy: move as it feels good to you, listen to your body and open your mind.
the results: individual results will vary… reduce stress, increase fitness, and maybe even feel empowered!

ARTober Humanities-themed Yoga Classes
Mind/Body Yoga for the Humanities
For ARTober, these free weekly community yoga classes will have an arts and humanities twist. In addition to breath and movement, these ARTober-inspired yoga classes will include elements like poetry, storytelling, contemporary music, and critical theory. It’s just a yoga class… with a fresh new way of connecting mind and body with the bigger worlds around us.
All classes are free and open to the public. Class is from 12 to 1:15 and will include some snacks and time to socialize afterward. Eastport Hall 124, UMA-Bangor, 128 Texas Ave.
Sunday, October 6: Poetry in Motion
Yoga has a language all its own, but it also connects with the swing and swirl of words that move us. Poetry packs a ton of meaning into a confined space just like yoga helps us expand the tight spaces of our minds and bodies. This yoga class will include a variety of poetry and participants will leave with a yoga poetry zine that includes take-home activities to inspire the poet (and yogi!) in each of us.
Sunday, October 13: Hip-Hop: Groove and Flow
Many contemporary artists include yoga themes in their music including MC Yogi, Stic.Man, Earth Rise SoundSystem, and Janelle Monáe. This yoga class will highlight hip-hop yoga music as well as the concept of flow—a moment when an individual is completely immersed in the task at hand, focused and euphoric. We will also consider American yoga as “sampling,” a borrowing (and perhaps manipulation) of sounds, ideas, theories, methods to make something new.
Sunday, October 20: Girls on Fire: Feminist Yoga for the Future
The story of the Girl on Fire will inspire our yoga class to think about ourselves as actors in our individual and collective futures. The Girl on Fire is an intersectional character. She is an actor and activist in her world. She is complicated. She is a leader in her community. The Girl on Fire challenges injustice and limited representations. She fights for herself and for those who are oppressed, voiceless, or powerless. She is the hope for our shared future. Feminist yoga ideas and practices will move our yoga in new ways.
Sunday, October 27: Yoga for Self-Care and Love
Our final ARTober yoga class reminds us of the importance of taking care of ourselves and helps us burn brighter, rather than burn out. We will also consider the ways in which yoga can help inspire us to serve those in need and can help us to love ourselves and others unconditionally. We will focus on heart openers and hip openers and softening the psoas muscle, the only muscle that connects the upper and lower body and a muscle that is often associated with both physical and mental discomfort. Participants will learn a variety of tools for self-care that they can use at home and work.
