Fulbright in Denmark
During the 2018-2019 academic year I was the Danish Distinguished Chair of American Studies at the Center for American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark. It sounds super-fancy, but it really wasn't. However, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work and live and teach in a different country and a different culture. I was also able to travel and teach and present my work in Norway, Portugal, and Greece.

Barack Obama: Our Pop Culture President ... and the End of Racism in America?
On September 28, 2018 I was privileged to give a talk to about 200 students who were waiting to see the main event: "A Conversation with the President" (Barack Obama). I was not, however, privileged enough to meet Barack Obama. That honor was reserved for my colleagues--the senior faculty at SDU. I barely got a seat and had to peer around a pillar, but the students stood on the steps behind the main audience seating, so I can't really complain. This event was one of my first experiences in Denmark and, in retrospect, it was unusual to have such a high level of formality. I guess the Danes got into the American spirit!
