Culture and Movement encourages people to “move and be moved.” Culture and Movement is, first and foremost, the descriptive container for the academic work of Professor Sarah Hentges at the University of Maine at Augusta. Via the Spiral Goddess Collective she provides educational workshops and retreats that emphasize movement, embodiment, empowerment, and radical self and community care as well as weekly yoga and conscious dance classes in the Bangor, Maine community.
Education. Embodiment. Empowerment.
Culture and Movement includes this website with resources as well as The Spiral Goddess Collective, LLC, the Spiral Goddess Collective, a Center for Mindful Movement (SGC) and The Spiral Goddess Collective Care Fund (SGCCF). All of these projects are based upon the life’s work of Sarah Hentges, a professor of transdisciplinary cultural studies at the University of Maine at Augusta who is also a yoga teacher, JourneyDance guide, fitness instructor, mentor, author, and critical/creative activist.
In 2013 Sarah Hentges created Culture and Movement to showcase her eclectic scholarship and community projects through her website and blog, and in 2022 she created the SGC and the SGCCF to amplify the work she has been doing for more than a decade—offering free yoga and dance classes, workshops, and retreats to the greater Bangor community—because she believes that we are more powerful when we are connected, when we lift each other up, and when we hold space for the healing and transformation of ourselves as well as others.
